Serie B About
Serie B, also known as Italian Serie B and marketed in some periods as Serie BKT, is Italy’s professional second-tier football league, positioned directly below Serie A. It is a national men’s competition for professional clubs and provides the principal route into Italy’s top flight, while also serving as the highest-level destination for teams rising from Serie C.
Identity and purpose
Established in its current unified form in 1929, Serie B is commonly associated with the Italian expression *campionato cadetto*, or “cadet championship”. Its role is both competitive and developmental: it gives established clubs the opportunity to return to Serie A, offers ambitious provincial sides a national stage, and provides a demanding environment in which emerging players can develop. The division’s broad geographical reach and competitive balance have made it one of the most closely contested second tiers in European football.
The competition is organised by the Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie B, generally known as Lega B, under the regulatory authority of the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC). Clubs must satisfy professional licensing requirements covering financial stability, stadium infrastructure and sporting administration before they can participate. Entry is therefore determined by sporting merit as well as compliance with the regulations governing professional football in Italy.
How clubs reach Serie B
The division normally contains 20 clubs. A place may be retained by a team that avoids relegation, gained through promotion from Serie C or acquired following relegation from Serie A. This movement between divisions gives the Italian league system a clear sporting pyramid: success in Serie B leads to the elite level, while failure can send a club into the third tier.
Under specific regulations, reserve teams connected to Serie A clubs may be eligible to compete as high as Serie B, provided they are not placed in the same division as their parent club. Their participation remains subject to the applicable licensing and competition rules.
Regular season and promotion
Serie B uses a double round-robin league format. Each club plays every other club twice, once at home and once away, producing 38 matches per team. The traditional Italian descriptions *andata* and *ritorno* refer respectively to the first and return phases of the fixture list, with the second phase repeating the match-ups in the opposite venue.
Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. The champion is the club finishing first and is awarded the Ali della Vittoria, or “Wings of Victory”, trophy. The top two clubs normally gain automatic promotion to Serie A. A third promotion place is decided through the promotion playoffs, subject to the qualifying conditions in force for the relevant edition.
The playoff field generally covers clubs finishing from third to eighth. However, the playoffs are not necessarily played every season: they take place when the points gap between the third- and fourth-placed teams is 14 points or fewer. The preliminary round consists of single matches between fifth and eighth, and sixth and seventh, hosted by the higher-ranked club. The winners proceed to two-legged semi-finals and a two-legged final, with the higher-ranked team hosting the second leg in each tie.
If a playoff tie other than the final is level on aggregate, the team that finished higher in the regular season advances without extra time or a penalty shootout. The precise application of extra time and penalties depends on the stage and the teams’ regular-season records, with shootouts principally relevant to the final when the applicable conditions require them.
Relegation and league rules
At the opposite end of the table, the bottom three clubs are normally relegated automatically to Serie C. A further relegation place may be settled by a two-legged playout between the teams placed 16th and 17th, provided the points gap between them is four points or fewer. If the gap is greater, the applicable regulations can remove the need for the tie and determine relegation directly from the table.
When clubs finish level on points, Serie B uses a defined sequence of sporting tiebreakers. The order begins with head-to-head records and goal difference in the head-to-head matches, followed by overall goal difference, total goals scored and, if necessary, a drawing of lots. This approach places direct meetings ahead of a club’s results across the entire season.
Season calendar and sporting stakes
The season usually begins in late August and runs through May. The regular campaign concludes in late spring, while promotion playoffs and relegation playouts generally extend the decisive matches into late May or early June. This closing phase gives the division two distinct pressures: clubs at the top compete for promotion and the Ali della Vittoria, while those at the bottom fight to preserve their professional status.
Serie B’s importance goes beyond its position in the pyramid. Promotion to Serie A brings sporting prestige and access to the highest level of Italian club football; relegation can reshape a club’s finances, squad and long-term strategy. That combination of opportunity, risk and tightly regulated movement between divisions explains why Serie B remains a defining part of Italy’s professional football structure.
