How the ranking works

The 2026 tournament contained 104 matches, compared with 64 in 2022. That expansion matters statistically: more fixtures increase the number of players used and widen the gap between a substitute's hot 40 minutes and a finalist's 700-plus-minute campaign. FIFA's official format confirms a 48-team, 104-match competition, while the Xtra-Stats match data contains all 104 completed fixtures.

The core measure is simple: recorded goals plus recorded assists, divided by minutes and multiplied by 90. The main ranking requires at least 180 minutes, roughly two full matches. A second table covers 30 to 179 minutes so that explosive substitute spells remain visible without being confused with tournament-long production.

Across the 524-player main sample, the median workload was 284.5 minutes. The median contribution rate was zero and the 75th percentile was 0.33 per 90. The correlation between minutes and contribution rate was only 0.086, effectively showing that simply staying on the pitch did not guarantee a higher attacking return.

The established efficiency leaders

Johan Manzambi tops the qualified ranking with five recorded contributions in 202 minutes. His 2.23-per-90 rate is exceptional, although the denominator remains close to the minimum threshold. The more durable benchmark belongs to Kylian Mbappé: nine goals, four assists and 707 minutes. He preserved a 1.65 rate across eight starts, a combination of efficiency and volume no other player in the top group matched.

Lionel Messi offers the other high-volume reference point. His seven goals and four assists came across 750 minutes, producing 1.32 per 90 and the highest average match rating in this leading group. Erling Haaland's seven goals in 483 minutes yielded a similar 1.30 rate without a recorded assist. Bukayo Saka occupied a useful middle ground: six contributions in 370 minutes, despite starting only three of his seven appearances.

The table also shows why a rate needs context. Manzambi, Summerville and Nathan-Dylan Saliba cleared the threshold but still played fewer than 240 minutes. Mbappé, Messi, Dembélé and Haaland sustained slightly lower rates while carrying far larger workloads and facing more opportunities for regression.

Why cameos need their own table

A per-90 leaderboard without a floor would place one-assist substitutes alongside tournament ever-presents. Deniz Undav is the most convincing player in the cameo band: four contributions in 152 minutes, including two starts. Tshepang Moremi matched his 2.37 rate with one assist in only 38 minutes. The arithmetic is correct in both cases; the evidential weight is not the same.

These players should not disappear from the story. A substitute can decide a knockout match in one action. But a cameo rate is better understood as evidence of leverage than proof of repeatable superiority. The split-table approach preserves both ideas.

What changed for the 2022 returnees

Exact player identifiers connect 264 footballers with recorded minutes in both tournaments. That allows a direct role-and-output comparison without fuzzy name matching. The strongest gains were not always driven by extra playing time. Some players became much more productive inside broadly similar workloads; others moved from marginal roles to central ones.

Sarr is the cleanest like-for-like story: his minutes rose only modestly, but his recorded output jumped from one contribution to five. Dembélé added both volume and efficiency, moving from two contributions in 438 minutes to eight in 606. Trossard illustrates role expansion: 102 minutes without a recorded contribution in 2022 became 511 minutes and four contributions in 2026.

Charles De Ketelaere produced another sharp role change, from 15 minutes in 2022 to 355 and four recorded contributions in 2026. Bruno Guimarães moved from 67 minutes and no recorded contribution to 425 minutes and four. Those cases measure both player development and changing tactical status; the rate alone cannot separate the two.

Minutes without recorded output are not empty minutes

At the other end of the scale, Rodri logged 740 minutes without a goal or assist in the player-stat feed. Granit Xhaka reached 532, Remo Freuler 528 and Pedri 508. Treating those campaigns as attacking failures would be a category error. Goal contributions reward the final action, not ball progression, pressure resistance, defensive positioning or the pass before the assist.

This is where the average ratings provide a useful check. Rodri's 7.57 average and Pedri's 7.16 sit comfortably above a neutral performance line despite zero recorded contributions. Vitinha similarly averaged 7.32 across 381 minutes. Their placement is a warning against turning a focused efficiency metric into an all-purpose player ranking.

Reading rule: a high G+A/90 rate identifies efficient recorded end product. A low rate does not establish poor overall performance, especially for midfielders, defenders and goalkeepers.

What the numbers really say

The strongest 2026 profile is not simply the highest rate. It is the rare combination of output, workload and repeatability. Mbappé leads that synthesis: 13 recorded contributions, every appearance as a starter and nearly 700 minutes. Messi is close in workload and overall influence, while Haaland delivered a pure scoring version of the same high-volume efficiency.

Below them, the tournament produced a meaningful group of specialists. Manzambi and Summerville maximised limited windows. Saka delivered six contributions despite only three starts. Undav supplied a substitute-heavy burst that deserves recognition but not direct equivalence with the eight-match leaders.

The returnee comparison adds a second dimension. It shows where tournament roles evolved over four years: Dembélé and Sarr improved output in already substantial workloads, while Trossard, De Ketelaere and Bruno Guimarães became much more central. These are not forecasts of future form. They are concise descriptions of how opportunity and recorded end product aligned in this competition.

Ultimately, minutes are not a nuisance variable to divide away. They are part of the performance story. A rate tells us how frequently something happened; the denominator tells us how much confidence to place in it.

Limits and method

The analysis aggregates player-by-match rows for all 104 completed 2026 fixtures and the 64 completed 2022 fixtures. A player counts as returning only when the same internal player identifier appears in both editions. Starts are rows marked as non-substitute, and rates use total recorded minutes.

The 2026 player-stat feed records 270 goals and 204 assists, while match scores contain 308 goals. The event feed also contains duplicated goal-like records and shoot-out events, so it was not used to overwrite player totals. This is why the article consistently labels goals, assists and contributions as recorded. Minutes and player identities passed duplicate and multi-team-context checks.

Per-90 rates become volatile at low minutes. The main table therefore uses a 180-minute floor and isolates 30-to-179-minute cameos. Average ratings are included only as context because they are provider-derived and are unavailable for 93 of the 3,191 player-appearance rows. Event-count nulls are treated as zero for additive player metrics, which may understate actions that were not captured.
