Liga I About
Liga I is Romania’s top-tier men’s professional football league, currently known officially as the SuperLiga for sponsorship reasons. It is the country’s premier domestic competition, bringing together 16 licensed professional clubs to determine the Romanian champion and establish access to UEFA club competitions. The league is operated by the Liga Profesionistă de Fotbal (LPF), with competition oversight and licensing requirements involving the Romanian Football Federation (FRF).
Identity and purpose
Founded in 1909, Liga I sits at the summit of Romania’s football pyramid. Its central sporting purpose is to crown the national champion, but the competition also provides the principal route for Romanian clubs seeking continental football. Clubs compete across a regular season and a subsequent split phase, creating separate sporting objectives for the title contenders and teams fighting to remain in the division.
The competition was known as Divizia A until 2006, reflecting its earlier place in Romanian football’s history. Its modern professional structure continues a long tradition involving some of the country’s best-known clubs. Bucharest has been a major centre of the league’s historic rivalries, including the meetings between FCSB, historically associated with Steaua București, and Dinamo București.
League organisation and eligibility
The LPF manages league operations and commercial matters, while clubs must satisfy licensing, financial, infrastructure and legal conditions established within the Romanian football system. Sporting eligibility is also maintained through promotion and relegation. Teams finishing at the bottom of the table face a direct route to Liga II, while clubs in the relegation positions immediately above them may have to protect their top-flight status in two-legged play-offs against Liga II opposition.
The precise European places available can vary according to the applicable UEFA access list and Romania’s coefficient position. In the usual arrangement, the league champion enters the UEFA Champions League qualifying pathway. Other leading finishers, together with designated domestic play-off winners, can qualify for the UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds. These places make the later stages of the season significant well beyond the domestic title race.
Regular season and split phase
The competition uses a hybrid format. During the regular season, all 16 clubs play each other twice, once at home and once away. This produces 30 matches for every team and establishes the standings used to divide the league into two groups.
After the regular season, the top six clubs enter the Championship Play-offs. Each plays the other five teams home and away, adding 10 matches to the campaign. This phase decides the champion and helps determine the leading European qualification positions.
The remaining 10 clubs enter the Relegation Play-outs. They play a single round-robin schedule of nine matches, with the resulting standings determining which teams are relegated directly and which must contest survival play-offs. This split structure preserves meaningful competition throughout the table: clubs can pursue the championship, European football or top-flight survival according to their regular-season position.
Points earned in the regular season are halved when the split phase begins. Where an odd total creates a rounding issue, the applicable competition regulations determine how the figure is treated; the rounding status can also matter when teams finish level on points. The system compresses the table before the decisive phase and is intended to keep both the title race and the relegation battle competitive.
Scoring and tie-break rules
Liga I follows the standard football points system: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. If teams are level after the split phase, ranking criteria include the treatment of points during the halving process, head-to-head results from the regular season and goal difference. The full order of criteria is governed by the competition regulations in force for the relevant edition, so individual cases should be read in that regulatory context.
League fixtures are decided in normal playing time, including stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs are relevant to two-legged promotion, relegation or European play-off ties when the aggregate score remains level. The away-goals rule is not applied in these ties.
Season calendar and sporting significance
The season normally runs from July to May, following the broad calendar used by major European leagues. A winter break is customary, with the schedule typically resuming after the coldest part of the season, while occasional midweek rounds help accommodate the regular season and split phase.
