Lennard Maloney

Lennard Maloney is a Berlin-born American defender who has also developed into a defensive midfielder. He began in Union Berlin’s academy and made his professional debut for the club in the 2. Bundesliga as an 18-year-old. In 2020, Maloney moved to Borussia Dortmund II, where he helped the reserve side win the Regionalliga West and gain promotion to the 3. Liga. He made his Bundesliga debut for Dortmund in October 2021, coming on for Mats Hummels against Arminia Bielefeld. Maloney joined 1. FC Heidenheim in 2022, and coach Frank Schmidt’s decision to use him at the base of midfield became a turning point. He played 31 matches in Heidenheim’s promotion-winning Bundesliga 2 campaign and later made his United States debut against Ghana in October 2023. In January 2025, Maloney signed for Mainz 05, bringing defensive discipline, aerial strength and tireless recovery work.
