José María Giménez de Vargas
José María Giménez de Vargas is a Uruguayan centre-back who plays for Atlético Madrid. Born in Toledo in 1995, he developed at Danubio and made his senior debut for the club in 2012. Atlético signed Giménez in 2013, and he initially learned alongside established defenders Diego Godín and Miranda before becoming a regular in Madrid. He has made more than 300 appearances for Atlético and helped the club win La Liga in 2013–14 and 2020–21, as well as the 2017–18 UEFA Europa League. At international level, Giménez made his World Cup debut for Uruguay in 2014, starting against England in a 2–1 victory. He scored a late header against Egypt at the 2018 World Cup and also scored against Juventus in the 2019 Champions League. Right-footed and 186 centimetres tall, Giménez combines front-foot defending with aerial strength and remains a key Atlético and Uruguay player.
