Fabian Lukas Schär

Fabian Lukas Schär is a Swiss centre-back known for combining defensive work with confident distribution. Born in Wil on 20 December 1991, he developed at hometown club FC Wil and broke into professional football before joining FC Basel 1893 in 2012. At Basel, Schär won three consecutive Swiss Super League titles and played regularly in the UEFA Champions League. He then moved abroad to 1899 Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga and later joined Deportivo La Coruña in Spain. In 2018, Newcastle United signed Schär, where he established himself as a right-footed central defender capable of carrying the ball forward and threatening from set pieces. Internationally, he represented Switzerland at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups and the 2016, 2020 and 2024 European Championships. Schär remains part of Newcastle’s senior squad, bringing experience to its defensive line.
