The clean-sheet rate softened

A clean sheet is a team-level event: one side finishes with zero goals conceded. A failed-to-score event is also team-level: one side finishes with zero goals scored. Because the two observations are linked by the same scoreline, the first step is to keep team events separate from fixture counts.

Each 306-match season creates 612 team performances. Against that denominator, clean-sheet events fell from 163 in 2015 to 153 in 2024. The team-event rate moved from 26.6% to 25.0%. The change is modest, but it is consistent with fewer fixtures containing a zero on the scoreboard.

The table deliberately shows both event types. They should match row for row if the scoreline accounting is complete. That equality is a useful audit check, not a claim that defending and attacking are separate phenomena in this particular measure.

Blank scorelines are a match story

A match with one zero-scoring team has at least one clean sheet and at least one failed-to-score event. At match level, 139 of 306 fixtures had a blank side in 2015, or 45.4%. In 2024 the count was 131, or 42.8%. The complement is the number of matches in which both teams scored: 167 in 2015 and 175 in 2024.

The two categories are exact complements here because every completed fixture has a final score. A reader can therefore move from the team-event table to the match-level story without adding a hidden category: 139 blank-side matches plus 167 both-scored matches equals the 306-match schedule in 2015; 131 plus 175 equals 306 in 2024.

This is also why the phrase “clean sheets declined” should not be inflated into “defending disappeared.” In 2024 there were still 153 team clean-sheet events. The observed change is a shift in frequency, not the removal of shutouts from the competition.

The decade’s broad signal is fewer matches with a blank side, not a disappearance of defensive shutouts.

The middle seasons matter

The first three seasons were relatively high in clean-sheet events: 163 in 2015, 157 in 2016 and 159 in 2017. Matches with at least one blank side were 139, 138 and 138. Scoreless draws were 24, 19 and 21. The match-level story was already moving slightly, but not in a straight line.

The next three seasons produced a clearer shift. Clean-sheet events were 141 in 2018, 140 in 2019 and 140 in 2020. Both teams scored in 182, 178 and 184 matches respectively. The 2019 row is notable for only 12 scoreless draws, the lowest total in the window, even though it still had 140 paired team events.

From 2021 to 2023 the clean-sheet total declined to 136, 140 and 130. The 2023 season had the most both-scored matches, 189, and only 13 scoreless draws. That is the clearest single-season expression of an open scoreline distribution in this table.

The 2024 rebound complicates the endpoint. Clean-sheet events rose to 153, blank-side matches to 131 and scoreless draws to 22. Both teams scored in 175 matches, below the 2023 high but above 2015. The recent data therefore support a lower long-run rate with meaningful annual reversals.

What the scoreline runs reveal

The rows can be grouped into three scoreline patterns. In 2015–2017, blank-side matches were 139, 138 and 138, while both-teams-scored matches were 167, 168 and 168. The two sides of the ledger were close to their decade averages, with 0–0 draws between 19 and 24.

In 2018 and 2019 the number of matches with a blank side fell to 124 and 128. The both-scored count was 182 and 178. The 2019 season is especially interesting because it combined only 12 scoreless draws with 140 team events: most of its blank-side fixtures were one-sided scorelines rather than 0–0s.

2020–2022 kept the blank-side count between 120 and 125, the narrowest three-season band in the table. Both teams scored in 184, 186 and 181 matches. The clean-sheet event total remained around 136–140. This is the period in which the match-level signal looks most stable, even though the precise number of shutouts still moves.

2023 was the open-scoreline extreme: 117 blank-side matches, 189 both-scored matches and only 13 scoreless draws. The 2024 rebound to 131 blank-side matches and 22 scoreless draws shows the cost of reading a single low as a new normal. The decade’s highest both-scored count and its subsequent fall sit next to one another.

These observations are all scoreline statements. They do not tell us whether the goals came from more shots, better finishing or different tactical choices. Keeping that boundary visible is what allows a clean-sheet trend to remain useful without becoming an unsupported explanation.

Two labels for one zero

For a 1–0 match, the winner records a clean sheet and the loser records a failed-to-score event. For a 0–0 match, both teams record both events, so the fixture contributes two to each team-event total. This explains why the clean-sheet and failed-to-score columns are identical while the match-level blank count is lower.

Across 2015–2024 there were 1,459 team clean-sheet events and 1,778 matches in which both teams scored. The window contained 177 scoreless draws. These totals are descriptive checks on the scorelines; they do not measure expected goals, shots, goalkeeper quality or the strength of the opposing attacks.

The distinction is especially important when comparing leagues or formats. A change in the number of matches would change the raw event count even if the rate stayed constant. That is why this article reports both counts and denominators and keeps the 306-match seasonal base fixed.

Why both denominators matter

The clean-sheet rate uses 612 team performances per season, while the blank-side rate uses 306 matches. Those denominators answer different questions. The first asks how often an individual team kept its goal out; the second asks how often a fixture had at least one team scoring zero. A 0–0 draw contributes two team events but only one blank-side match.

This distinction also explains why the team-event total is not twice the match count. A 1–0 score produces one clean sheet and one failed-to-score event, but a 2–1 score produces neither. The 2015 total of 163 events and the 2024 total of 153 therefore describe the frequency of zeros across team performances, while 139 and 131 describe the number of fixtures touched by a zero.

Read together, the measures show a small endpoint decline in zero-goal events and a larger amount of seasonal variation around it. They are suitable for describing scoreline distribution; they are not a substitute for a defensive performance model.

The seasonal check

The middle rows keep the endpoint movement in proportion. Clean-sheet events were 163, 157 and 159 from 2015 through 2017, then 141, 140 and 140 from 2018 through 2020. The lower band continued in 2021 and 2023, when the counts were 136 and 130, before 2024 returned to 153. There is a long softening in the series, but no uninterrupted annual decline.

The match-level counts follow a related path. Fixtures with at least one blank side fell from 139 in 2015 to 120 in 2021, reached 117 in 2023 and rose to 131 in 2024. Both teams scored in 167, 186 and 189 matches in the first, 2021 and 2023 reference rows. The complement makes the direction visible without treating a single scoreline as a cause.

Scoreless draws add another layer. They ranged from 12 in 2019 to 24 in 2015, with 13 in 2023 and 22 in 2024. A low 0–0 count can sit beside many one-sided scorelines, so the nil-nil subset should never replace the broader blank-side count. The safe reading is a lower endpoint frequency of zeros with substantial seasonal variation around it.

Limits and method

  • Scope: ten completed seasons from 2015 through 2024, with regular-season fixtures only.
  • Clean sheets and failed-to-score events count each team performance; match-level counts count a fixture once.
  • Both teams scored and 0–0 are scoreline categories, not measures of shot quality or defensive strength.
  • Percentages use 612 team performances or 306 matches as appropriate and are rounded to one decimal point.
  • Extra non-league fixtures are excluded so the scoreline base is consistent.
