Scope and definitions
The Ligue 1 series covers completed regular-season matches from 2010 through 2025. The home-win percentage is home wins divided by matches. The home goal edge is the difference between home and away goals divided by matches. Draws and away wins are shown beside the home figure so the three outcomes always add back to the full season.
The detailed table starts in 2014 to keep the article focused on the format comparison, while the opening paragraph and the audit retain the full 2010–25 series. The early context is clear: home-win shares were 41.32% in 2010, 47.11% in 2011, 44.74% in 2012 and 44.21% in 2013.
The 2019 row contains 279 matches, and the 18-club rows contain 306, 306 and 305 matches in 2023–25. Those counts affect confidence and are not silently padded to a planned schedule.
The long trend is uneven, not linear
The strongest home-win season in the series is 2016 at 48.95%, with a 0.487-goal edge. The lowest home-win share is 2020 at 37.37%; the goal edge almost disappeared at 0.034. That gap is too large to describe as a smooth drift. It is a reminder that the average home effect moves with the season.
Home wins were above 45% in 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2024–25, but the away share reached 37.63% in 2020 and stayed above 32% in 2022–24. A home advantage can remain positive in goals while becoming less decisive in the result distribution.
The draw share also matters. It was 23.16% in 2014 and 28.95% in 2018, then 20.26% in 2024. If draws fall while away wins rise, the home-win share can look weaker even when home goals still lead.

Across the two windows, home-win share fell 1.41 percentage points and the goal edge fell 0.117 goals per match. Away wins rose 3.91 points. The later era therefore looks less home-dominant on both measures, even though the home side still scored more overall.
The window contrast should not be turned into a fixed rule for every club. The later sample contains three seasons, and each season has its own team mix, injuries and match states. The aggregate is a useful direction-of-travel marker, not an explanation for a particular stadium.

2024 supplies the most convincing recent rebound in home wins at 46.73%, but its 0.239 goal edge remains below the 2016 peak. The 2025 row is similar in home-win share at 46.23% and higher in goal edge at 0.344, showing why both measures belong in the same reading.
At the other end, 2020 is not just the lowest home-win season in the displayed table. Its 143 away wins exceed the 142 home wins, and its home and away goal totals differ by only 13 across 380 matches. That is a near-neutral home scoring season rather than a normal positive edge.
How to read home advantage
The home-win share describes the result distribution; the goal edge describes scoring margin. They can move apart when close matches become draws or when away wins replace narrow home wins. Neither measure identifies why the result changed. Travel, attendance, tactics, officiating, scheduling and team strength are plausible contexts, but this dataset alone does not isolate them.
The format change also changes the pool of matches and the number of teams. The defensible statement is therefore comparative: the recorded 18-club regular seasons show a smaller average home edge than 2014–18, with a sharp 2020 interruption and a partial rebound afterwards.
Use both measures when checking a new season. If the home-win share rises but the goal edge does not, the change may be concentrated in narrow results. If the edge rises while the win share is flat, draws or away wins may be absorbing the difference. The table makes those possibilities visible without pretending to choose among them.
The 2014–18 baseline is deliberately broad enough to smooth one unusual year, but it is not a forecast. Its 1,900 matches contain five different team pools and five different schedules. The later 917-match window contains only three seasons and begins after the club-count change. Comparing the averages is informative; assigning the difference to one event would go beyond what the denominators can prove.
There is a practical reason to keep draw share in the table. Suppose home wins fall while draws rise: the competition may have become more balanced without becoming more favourable to away teams. Suppose home wins fall while away wins rise: the result distribution has shifted more sharply. Ligue 1 shows both patterns at different points, so a single home-win line is too narrow for an evergreen article.
The near-neutral 2020 season deserves the same care. Its home goal edge is positive but tiny, and its away-win share is almost the same as the home-win share. When a new completed season is added, update the observed match count first, then recompute outcome shares and the goal edge. Another useful safeguard is to keep the comparison anchored to the same phase. Ligue 1’s regular season is the stable unit here; adding cup ties, promotion matches or other rounds would change the balance of venues and teams. The home edge would then answer a broader schedule question, not the league-season question posed by the article.
The result is best carried forward as a range of evidence: a long period with positive home scoring, a near-neutral 2020 interruption, and a later period in which the edge returns without regaining the early average. That description is more resilient than a claim that home advantage either disappeared or stayed constant.

The sample includes completed regular-season matches with recorded final scores. Extra-time goals remain in the final football score; shoot-out kicks are not goals. A short season is reported with its observed match count rather than treated as a full schedule.
