Primera División RFEF - Group 4 About

Primera División RFEF - Group 4 is a recorded Spanish men’s league competition, but the modern official structure requires an important distinction: Primera Federación is Spain’s third tier, while Group 4 is associated with the fourth-tier Segunda Federación. The name therefore reflects a historical or legacy designation rather than a current Primera Federación group.

2Identity and place in Spanish football/2

Spain’s lower-league pyramid has been reorganised several times, and similar terminology has been used across different periods. In the current structure, the Spanish Primera Federación sits directly below Segunda División and is divided into two regionalised groups. Segunda Federación occupies the next level, below Primera Federación, and is divided into five groups of 18 teams. The modern competition normally referred to as Segunda Federación - Group 4 is a semi-professional league serving clubs primarily from southern Spain, with the geographical allocation determined by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) each season. Ceuta and Melilla may also be included within the regional composition.

The historical record attached to Primera División RFEF - Group 4 covers the 2019 and 2020 seasons, with a first recorded event dated 24 August 2019. Its wider historical information is associated with a competition formation date of 1977, although the organisation and naming of Spain’s lower divisions have since changed. The modern Primera Federación and Segunda Federación were established as part of a later restructuring, so historical statistics should be read in the context of the specific season and competition format in which they were recorded.

2Governance and purpose/2

The competition is administered by the RFEF, which sets the entry conditions, disciplinary framework, scheduling principles and sporting regulations. Its role is to connect regional and semi-professional football with the national professional pyramid. Clubs can develop young players, provide competitive football for experienced professionals and, in some cases, operate reserve sides for teams from La Liga or Segunda División.

Reserve teams are permitted to compete provided that they remain below their senior club in the pyramid. A reserve side cannot share a division with its first team; if the senior team is relegated into the same level, the reserve team must be moved down. This rule protects the sporting separation between senior and development squads while allowing prominent academies to compete nationally.

2League format and promotion route/2

The current Group 4 structure uses a double round-robin league format. With 18 clubs, every team plays the other 17 sides at home and away, producing 34 matches per club across the regular phase. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat.

The group champion normally earns direct promotion to Primera Federación, making first place the clearest route upward. Clubs finishing from second to fifth enter the promotion play-offs, where they meet qualifying teams from other groups in a multi-round knockout competition. Ties are generally played over two legs, with the aggregate score deciding which club progresses. Higher regular-season finishers are usually given the advantage in the draw or in the event of an aggregate tie, reducing the need for a penalty shoot-out where the applicable regulations provide for league-position precedence.

At the other end of the table, the bottom positions are exposed to relegation to Tercera Federación, Spain’s fifth tier. The exact number of automatic relegations and any additional play-off arrangements can depend on the season’s regulations and on the number of clubs moving between divisions. The broad sporting principle remains consistent: poor league performance can lead directly to demotion, while promotion is earned either by winning the group or by succeeding in the play-offs.

2Match rules and tie-breakers/2

League standings are initially determined by points. When clubs finish level, head-to-head performance is used as the principal comparison, followed where required by head-to-head goal difference and then overall goal difference. The precise order can be affected by the RFEF regulations applying to a particular edition, so season-specific tables should always be interpreted alongside the rules in force at that time.

Promotion play-off matches retain the competitive character of knockout football while rewarding regular-season achievement. A tie level after two legs can proceed to extra time, and the higher-ranked team may advance if the regulations use final league position as the deciding criterion. This format gives clubs a meaningful incentive to finish as high as possible even when automatic promotion is no longer attainable.

2Season calendar and sporting significance/2

A typical campaign begins in late August or early September and runs through May, with promotion play-offs extending into June. The calendar balances a long league programme with a short, high-pressure conclusion in which a small number of fixtures can determine a club’s future level.

For participating clubs, the competition offers more than a regional title. Promotion brings stronger opposition, greater visibility and a pathway towards professional football. Successful non-reserve teams may also gain access to the Copa del Rey under the qualification rules for the relevant season, creating the possibility of national-profile ties and additional revenue. For reserve sides, the league provides a demanding environment in which emerging players can bridge the gap between academy football and senior competition.

Primera División RFEF - Group 4 should therefore be understood through its recorded season context and its relationship with Spain’s changing lower-league structure. For current purposes, the relevant Group 4 competition is Segunda Federación - Group 4, a national-level, semi-professional league governed by the RFEF and built around regional regular-season football followed by promotion and relegation routes.
