Liga Profesional Argentina is Argentina’s premier men’s football league, officially known as the Liga Profesional de Fútbol (LPF), and the highest division in the country’s league system. Governed by the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA), it brings together Argentina’s leading clubs to contest domestic titles and earn access to South America’s principal club competitions.

Identity and historical role

The competition represents the modern top-flight expression of a football tradition that began in 1891, when Argentina established the first football league outside the United Kingdom. The division became professional in 1931, marking a major change in the organisation and status of the country’s leading clubs. Its recorded competition coverage on this page runs from the 2015 season through 2025, with the first recorded event dated 13 February 2015.

The LPF is more than a league table. It is the central domestic pathway for Argentina’s established and emerging clubs, while its matches provide an important platform for players who go on to careers elsewhere in South America and Europe. The competition’s broad purpose is to determine national champions, establish the country’s leading teams and help shape qualification for the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana.

Access, promotion and relegation

Entry is based on sporting merit within the Argentine football pyramid. Clubs reach the top flight through promotion from the Primera Nacional, the second tier, while teams at the bottom can lose their status. Relegation has traditionally involved a coefficient, or promedios, calculated from points gathered over several seasons. This system is intended to measure sustained performance rather than judge a club solely on one difficult campaign. Aggregate-season performance may also form part of the relegation assessment, depending on the regulations in force for the relevant edition.

The structure means that clubs compete on two fronts: for the title and international places at the top of the standings, and for survival at the other end. Only AFA-affiliated clubs meeting the competition’s regulatory requirements are eligible to participate.

Competition format and progression

The format has changed repeatedly across the modern era, so the Liga Profesional Argentina should not be understood as a permanently fixed single-format tournament. Argentine top-flight seasons have used both traditional league schedules and hybrid designs combining group play with knockout rounds. Some calendar arrangements have divided the year into an Apertura and a Clausura, while others have paired a league tournament with a Copa de la Liga-style competition.

In the group-based format used in recent editions, teams are divided into zones and play a single round-robin schedule within their group, supplemented by selected inter-zone fixtures, often involving established derby or clásico pairings. The leading sides then progress to a knockout phase. Depending on the edition, this may begin with the round of 16 or the quarter-finals and continue through semi-finals to a final. Higher-seeded teams generally receive home advantage in early single-leg rounds, while the final may be played at a neutral venue.

Other editions have used a fuller league schedule in which teams accumulate points across a round-robin campaign. Where separate Apertura and Clausura tournaments are staged, each has its own competitive outcome, and additional aggregate or champion-deciding matches can connect the winners. The governing regulations for each season therefore determine the exact number of clubs, fixtures, phases and titles at stake.

Scoring, tie-breakers and match rules

The standard league points system applies: a win earns three points, a draw one point and a defeat none. In league or group standings, tied teams are generally separated through goal difference, goals scored and head-to-head criteria, in the order specified by the regulations for that competition phase.

Knockout matches are decided by the rules of the relevant edition. A tied single-leg fixture may go directly to a penalty shootout, while a final can include 30 minutes of extra time before penalties are used. These distinctions matter because not every stage follows the same procedure after 90 minutes. In a conventional league phase, matches remain draws and points are shared.

Calendar and sporting stakes

The Argentine top-flight calendar normally follows the January-to-December year. In formats built around two tournaments, the Apertura generally occupies the first half of the year and the Clausura the second. In other seasons, the first half has featured a group-based cup competition before a league tournament takes place later in the year. The schedule can therefore produce several meaningful title races within one calendar season rather than one uninterrupted championship campaign.

Finishing position has consequences beyond the domestic trophy. High-ranking clubs can secure qualification routes to the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, subject to the allocation and regulations applicable to that season. At the other end, relegation pressure is shaped by both current results and longer-term coefficient calculations. That combination of immediate form, accumulated performance and changing tournament design gives the LPF its distinctive competitive character: Argentina’s top clubs must navigate a demanding national championship while pursuing continental football and protecting their place in the division.
