Eerste Divisie is the Netherlands’ second-tier men’s professional football league, currently commercially known as the Keuken Kampioen Divisie. Governed by the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), it sits directly below the Eredivisie and provides the principal competitive route towards Dutch top-flight football. The league combines established professional clubs with Jong reserve teams, making it both a promotion contest and an important development environment for emerging players.
Origins and role in Dutch football
Founded in 1956, the Eerste Divisie has formed a central part of the Netherlands’ professional football structure for almost seven decades. Its purpose is twofold: to give independent clubs a route to the Eredivisie and to offer high-level match experience to young players developing within the academies of top-flight clubs. This dual role explains the league’s distinctive mixture of ambitious senior sides and reserve teams such as Jong Ajax and Jong PSV.
The competition is administered within the KNVB’s professional football framework. Clubs must hold an appropriate professional licence and satisfy sporting, financial, administrative and infrastructure requirements. These conditions include stadium standards, floodlighting and squad-related obligations. Reserve teams must also comply with eligibility rules designed to protect the sporting structure: they cannot be promoted to the Eredivisie and cannot compete in the same division as their senior club.
League format and period titles
The standard Eerste Divisie season is a 20-club double round-robin league. Each team plays every other club twice, once at home and once away, producing 38 matches per side. Results are converted into the usual three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. The league table is primarily ordered by points, followed by goal difference and goals scored where those criteria are required.
A feature that sets the competition apart is its period system. The regular season is divided into four periods, generally lasting nine or ten rounds. The best-performing team in each period receives a period title and a place in the promotion play-offs. If a period winner has already secured promotion or is otherwise ineligible, the qualification place passes to the next eligible team under the applicable competition rules. This arrangement means that a strong short sequence of results can remain highly significant even when a club is not leading the overall table.
The Nacompetitie and promotion
The post-season promotion tournament is known as the Nacompetitie. It brings together the eligible period winners and the highest-placed clubs from the final table that have not already qualified or secured promotion. The 16th-placed team from the Eredivisie also enters, defending its place in the top flight against challengers from the second tier.
The play-offs are generally contested over two legs, with the teams meeting at home and away. If the aggregate score is level after the second match, extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out determine the winner. The tournament therefore adds a separate knockout dimension to the league campaign and keeps promotion opportunities open beyond the final standings.
The Eerste Divisie champion and runner-up normally earn automatic promotion to the Eredivisie, subject to the relevant eligibility rules. Jong teams cannot take those promotion places, so an ineligible reserve side’s position is treated according to the competition regulations. The lower end of the table carries its own uncertainty: the lowest-ranked eligible independent club may face a route towards the semi-professional Tweede Divisie, although relegation depends on the applicable rules and whether a potential replacement can satisfy professional licensing requirements.
Season calendar and sporting identity
The competition usually runs from August to May, with a winter break around December and January. Clubs operate within the standard Dutch summer and winter transfer windows, while the long league programme allows form, squad depth and player development to shape the final outcome. The 38-match schedule rewards consistency, but the period titles and Nacompetitie ensure that individual runs of form can transform the promotion race.
For supporters, the league offers a meeting point between immediate competitive ambition and long-term development. Independent clubs pursue the financial and sporting rewards of reaching the Eredivisie, while Jong sides use the level to prepare elite prospects for senior football. That combination, together with its period system and promotion play-offs, gives the Dutch Eerste Divisie a structure that is more layered than a conventional second-tier league.
