CONMEBOL Sudamericana About

CONMEBOL Sudamericana, officially known in current competition branding as the CONMEBOL Copa Sudamericana, is a South American men’s club football cup organised by CONMEBOL. It is the continent’s secondary international club competition, providing a route to continental honours for teams competing just below the usual Copa Libertadores qualification places.

Purpose and place in South American football

The competition brings together clubs from across the CONMEBOL region and gives them a sustained programme of international football beyond their domestic leagues and cups. Its role is both sporting and developmental: it offers clubs valuable continental experience, wider exposure and the opportunity to challenge for a major trophy without beginning the season in the Libertadores.

Qualification is principally earned through domestic performance. The ten CONMEBOL member associations receive places under the competition’s access regulations, with clubs generally entering after achieving the required position in their national league or domestic cup structure. The tournament can also absorb clubs from the Copa Libertadores. In the recent format, teams finishing third in a Libertadores group move into the Sudamericana knockout play-offs, creating a meeting point between two levels of continental competition.

History and governance

Established in 2002, the competition replaced the Copa Merconorte and Copa Mercosur as South America’s unified secondary club tournament. It has developed considerably since its early straight-knockout versions. The modern competition combines national qualifying phases, a group stage, cross-competition play-offs and a final played at a neutral venue, increasing the number of clubs involved while retaining the pressure of direct elimination.

CONMEBOL governs the tournament and sets its competition regulations, match standards, disciplinary framework and qualification arrangements. The recorded Xtra-Stats coverage runs from the 2019 season through 2025, spanning the period in which the single-match final became an established feature of the competition.

How the format works

The recent structure is designed to balance national representation with a progressive continental bracket:

  • First stage: Clubs from most member associations, excluding Brazil and Argentina in the described format, contest a single-match national phase. The winners advance to the group stage.
  • Group stage: Thirty-two teams are divided into eight groups of four. Each team plays the other clubs in its group home and away, with three points awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat.
  • Knockout play-offs: The eight group runners-up face the teams transferred from the Copa Libertadores after finishing third in their Libertadores groups. These two-legged ties determine the remaining Round of 16 places.
  • Final stages: The Round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals are played over two legs. The competition then concludes with a single-match final at a neutral venue selected in advance by CONMEBOL.

This progression means that a club must first negotiate a domestic-style entry phase or group campaign before facing the most demanding knockout ties. Group winners receive a direct route to the Round of 16, while runners-up must take the additional play-off route.

Points, tie-breakers and penalty shoot-outs

Group standings use the standard football points system: three points for a victory, one for a draw and zero for a loss. When teams finish level, goal difference and goals scored are key ranking criteria, followed by the additional criteria defined in the applicable CONMEBOL regulations, including away goals scored and the CONMEBOL ranking where required.

In the two-legged knockout rounds, a tie level on aggregate after the second match is decided by a penalty shoot-out rather than an away-goals advantage. The final is treated separately: if it is level after 90 minutes, extra time may be played before penalties decide the champion.

Calendar and progression

CONMEBOL Sudamericana follows the South American calendar year. Qualifying and first-stage matches normally begin in the opening months of the season, followed by group fixtures during the second quarter. The knockout play-offs and Round of 16 generally occupy the middle part of the year, while the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final are completed later in the season, usually between September and November.

The precise dates, access list, venue and regulatory details can vary by edition, but the broad rhythm remains clear: domestic qualification leads into continental group competition, then into increasingly decisive knockout rounds.

What the winner achieves

Winning the trophy brings major continental prestige and a place in the following season’s Copa Libertadores group stage, regardless of the champion’s domestic league position. The winner also qualifies for the Recopa Sudamericana, where it faces the Copa Libertadores champion. These rewards make the competition more than a secondary route: it is a direct springboard to the continent’s leading club tournaments and to further international recognition.

With its blend of national representation, Libertadores entrants, group-stage competition and high-stakes knockout football, the Copa Sudamericana has become one of the defining competitions in the South American club calendar.
