CONMEBOL Libertadores About

CONMEBOL Libertadores is South America’s premier men’s club football cup competition, bringing together leading clubs from the continent’s 10 CONMEBOL member nations to compete for the region’s most prestigious title. The tournament is organized and governed by CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation, and is traditionally known as the Copa Libertadores.

Identity and purpose

Founded in 1960, the competition was created to crown a continental club champion and give South America’s strongest teams a stage on which to measure themselves against one another. Its name honours the Libertadores, the leaders of the South American wars of independence. Although its participants come exclusively from South America, the tournament has an international profile and is followed by supporters around the world.

The Libertadores occupies the highest level of South American club competition. Qualification is earned principally through domestic league performance and national cup success, meaning that champions and high-placed teams from each country gain access according to their national allocation. Brazil and Argentina traditionally receive the largest number of places, while clubs from other CONMEBOL nations generally enter through smaller allocations. The reigning champions of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana also receive places in the following edition.

Qualification and preliminary rounds

Recent editions have used preliminary knockout rounds to determine the final entrants to the group stage. In the established structure, 19 teams begin across three qualifying stages, with two-legged ties reducing the field to four survivors. These rounds provide a route into the main competition for clubs that qualify from countries with fewer direct group-stage places, while the higher-ranked domestic qualifiers enter at a later point.

The group phase contains 32 teams divided into eight groups of four. Each team plays every other club in its group twice, once at home and once away, producing a double round-robin schedule. A win is worth three points, a draw one point and a defeat zero points. The top two teams in each group progress to the Round of 16. Clubs finishing third move into the playoff phase of the Copa Sudamericana, allowing them to remain in continental competition.

Knockout format and match rules

The Round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals are played over two legs, with each tie decided by the aggregate score across the home and away matches. The away-goals rule was abolished from the 2022 edition, so goals scored away from home no longer provide a separate advantage in a level tie. Under the recent knockout rules, a tie that remains level on aggregate after the second leg proceeds directly to a penalty shoot-out, without extra time.

The final is different from the preceding rounds. It is a single match played at a neutral venue selected in advance by CONMEBOL. If the scores are level after 90 minutes, the final goes to extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out. This one-match conclusion gives the competition its defining final-day spectacle, while the earlier two-legged rounds place a premium on managing both home and away performances.

Group positions are determined first by points. The tiebreaking framework identified for the 2026 edition gives priority to head-to-head performance between tied teams, followed by goal difference and goals scored in those matches, with the applicable competition regulations governing any further comparisons. These rules should be read by edition because tournament regulations can change over time.

Calendar, history and significance

The competition normally runs from late January or February through November. Preliminary rounds begin first, followed by the group phase and the knockout schedule, with the final forming the climax of the South American club season. The long calendar reflects the distances between participating countries and the need to accommodate domestic competitions across the continent.

Winning the CONMEBOL Libertadores brings the silver Copa Libertadores trophy and establishes the champion as the leading club side in South America for that season. The winner also qualifies for the Recopa Sudamericana, a two-legged contest against the Copa Sudamericana champion, and gains access to the relevant global champions’ competition, such as the FIFA Club World Cup or FIFA Intercontinental Cup under the applicable cycle.

The tournament’s history is marked by powerful Argentine and Brazilian clubs, with Argentine side Independiente holding the record for the most titles, seven. That legacy, the intensity of its two-legged ties and the importance of its single-match final make the Copa Libertadores one of football’s distinctive continental competitions. Xtra-Stats records seasons from 2019 through 2025, providing seven seasons of competition data for examining its clubs, fixtures, standings and results.
