Unai Simón Mendibil

Unai Simón Mendibil, commonly known as Unai Simón, is a Spanish goalkeeper born in Vitoria-Gasteiz on 11 June 1997. He developed at CD Aurrerá de Vitoria before joining Athletic Club’s Lezama academy in 2011. Simón progressed through Basconia and Athletic Bilbao B, gaining senior experience before a 2018 loan to Elche CF. He returned to Athletic Club soon afterwards and made his first-team debut against CD Leganés on 20 August 2018, later becoming the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and wearing the number-one shirt from the 2019–20 season. His Athletic career has brought the 2020–21 Supercopa de España and the 2023–24 Copa del Rey. At international level, Simón was involved in Spain’s Olympic silver-medal campaign at Tokyo 2020 and helped the senior side win the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League and UEFA Euro 2024. His Euro 2020 campaign included an own goal against Croatia followed by key saves, then two shootout penalty saves against Switzerland.
