Stefan Frei

Stefan Frei is a goalkeeper born in Altstätten, Switzerland, who is American by nationality. He developed in the San Francisco Bay Area after moving there with his family at 15, playing for De La Salle High School before becoming a standout at UC Berkeley. Toronto FC selected Frei 13th overall in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, and he started immediately while earning the club’s Defender of the Year award as a rookie. After four seasons in Toronto, Frei moved to Seattle Sounders in a 2013 trade. With Seattle, he established himself as a composed shot-stopper and helped the club win the 2014 Supporters’ Shield, the 2016 and 2019 MLS Cups, and the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League. His defining 2016 MLS Cup performance included a 108th-minute save from Jozy Altidore’s header, and he was named MVP after the penalty shootout. Frei remains linked with Seattle, where his experience and distribution have made him a long-serving presence in goal.
