Sebastian Matthew Berhalter

Sebastian Matthew Berhalter is an American midfielder born in London on 10 May 2001. He developed in Sweden with Hammarby IF’s youth ranks in 2012–13 before joining the Columbus Crew Academy in 2014, where he made more than 100 appearances across age groups. After one season at the University of North Carolina in 2019, Berhalter signed a Homegrown contract with Columbus in 2020 and made his professional debut. He gained further experience on loan with Austin FC in 2021, then moved to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in 2022. At Vancouver, Berhalter progressed from a defensively minded midfielder into a more influential box-to-box player, contributing through passing, set pieces and defensive work. His 2025 season brought MLS Best XI recognition, an MLS All-Star selection and his first senior United States call-up for the Gold Cup, where he helped the team reach the final.
