Roman Bürki

Roman Bürki is a Swiss goalkeeper born in Münsingen on 14 November 1990. He developed in Switzerland before establishing himself with Grasshoppers, where he progressed from backup to starter and helped win the 2013 Swiss Cup after a penalty shootout against Basel. In 2014, Bürki joined SC Freiburg, playing every minute of the Bundesliga campaign despite the club’s relegation. His form earned a 2015 move to Borussia Dortmund, where he became the successor to Roman Weidenfeller and spent seven seasons. Bürki made 232 appearances for Dortmund, kept 83 clean sheets and won the DFB-Pokal in 2017 and 2021, along with the DFL-Supercup in 2019. He later moved to expansion club St. Louis City for its inaugural MLS season in 2023, becoming the franchise’s first captain and a key outlet in build-up play. Bürki has also represented Switzerland, combining reflex saves with vocal organization and distribution from the back.
