Omar Federico Alderete Fernández

Omar Federico Alderete Fernández is a Paraguayan centre-back from Asunción, standing 188 cm tall. He developed at Cerro Porteño and entered senior football in 2016 before gaining regular experience during a 2017 loan at Gimnasia y Esgrima. He later played for Huracán, adding South American continental experience, and moved to Europe with FC Basel 1893 in 2019. Alderete then continued his progression at Hertha BSC before moving to Spain, where he represented Valencia and subsequently Getafe. At Getafe, the left-sided defender became associated with a disciplined defensive approach, while also offering cover at left-back. He returned to international prominence with Paraguay and scored against Brazil at the 2024 Copa América. Alderete is now listed with Sunderland, adding a physical, aerially capable presence to the club’s defence.
