Nicolás Ezequiel Fernández Mercau

Nicolás Ezequiel Fernández Mercau is an Argentine attacking midfielder born in Buenos Aires on January 11, 2000. He developed in San Lorenzo’s academy and signed his first professional contract in 2018, later making his senior debut for the club in November 2020. At San Lorenzo, Fernández Mercau gained experience in several roles, including wide midfield and wing-back, while establishing himself in Argentine senior football. In September 2022, he moved to Spain to join Elche, beginning a new stage of his career. He experienced relegation from La Liga before helping Elche mount a promotion push, with his attacking contribution increasing as he operated more centrally as a playmaker. Fernández Mercau joined New York City FC in 2025 and is now part of the MLS club’s midfield, where his left-footed passing, progressive carries and energetic pressing support both chance creation and defensive transitions.
