Matthew Edwards
Matthew Edwards is an American defender from Apex, North Carolina, born in 2003. He developed with International Development Futbol before joining Atlanta United’s academy in 2019, where he progressed to captain the under-19 side. Edwards made eight appearances for Atlanta United 2 in 2020, then chose college soccer at the University of North Carolina. With the Tar Heels, he started four matches as a freshman in 2021, played every match in 2022, and helped UNC reach the ACC Tournament final and NCAA Tournament quarterfinals in 2023. He returned to Atlanta United 2 for the 2024 MLS NEXT Pro season and again served as captain. On May 5, 2024, Edwards made his first-team debut for Atlanta United in a U.S. Open Cup victory over Charlotte Independence, providing an assist. Atlanta United signed him to a Homegrown contract in June 2024, and he made his MLS debut against Real Salt Lake the following month.
