Mats Wieffer

Mats Wieffer is a Dutch defensive midfielder from Borne, born on 16 November 1999. He developed at RKSV NEO before spending nearly a decade in FC Twente’s academy, making his professional debut in a 2018 KNVB Cup match and leaving the club in 2020. Wieffer then joined Excelsior Rotterdam, established himself in the Eerste Divisie, was named the club’s Player of the Year and helped them win promotion to the Eredivisie in 2022. Feyenoord signed him that summer, and he soon progressed from squad player to regular starter. He helped Feyenoord win the 2022–23 Eredivisie title and scored in a 1–0 Europa League quarter-final victory over Roma. His performances earned Wieffer a Netherlands debut against Gibraltar in March 2023. In 2024, he moved to Brighton, where the 1.88-metre midfielder has also been used in a versatile defensive role.
