Matthew Charles Turner

Matthew Charles Turner is a United States goalkeeper from Park Ridge, New Jersey, whose route to professional football began unusually late. He joined his high-school soccer team at 14, initially playing to stay fit for baseball, and moved into goal when another goalkeeper was injured. Turner later walked on at Fairfield University, where a difficult viral own goal in 2013 preceded a strong junior season in which he led the nation in save percentage and shutout percentage. Undrafted in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, he earned a trial with the New England Revolution and won the starting role in 2018. In 2021, Turner helped New England set an MLS points record and win the Supporters’ Shield, while also collecting Goalkeeper of the Year and All-Star Game MVP honors. He transferred to Arsenal in 2022, then joined Nottingham Forest and later Crystal Palace. For the United States, Turner started all four 2022 World Cup matches, keeping clean sheets against England and Iran, and later returned to New England.
