Matvey Safonov

Matvey Safonov is a Russian goalkeeper born in Krasnodar on 25 February 1999. He developed at FC Krasnodar, progressing through the club’s academy age groups and captaining youth sides from the age of 12. Safonov made his professional debut for Krasnodar in August 2017 and established himself as a senior goalkeeper during his years with the club. His European profile grew in October 2020, when he was named man of the match in Krasnodar’s Champions League debut against Rennes. In June 2024, Safonov moved to Paris Saint-Germain, adding Ligue 1 and Champions League football to his experience. He made his Russia debut in June 2021 and has since been involved with the national team. At 1.92 metres, Safonov combines shot-stopping with an assertive presence in the area, quick movement off his line and distribution that supports attacks from the back.
