Mathew David Ryan

Mathew David Ryan is an Australian goalkeeper born in Plumpton on 8 April 1992. He developed in Sydney football, including Marconi Stallions and Blacktown City, before making his professional breakthrough with Central Coast Mariners in 2010. Ryan won the Joe Marston Medal in the 2011 A-League Grand Final and was named A-League Young Footballer of the Year in consecutive seasons, 2010–11 and 2011–12. In 2013 he moved to Club Brugge, where he was twice named Belgian Pro League Goalkeeper of the Year, then continued to Valencia before joining Brighton & Hove Albion in 2017. His European career also included Real Sociedad, an Arsenal loan, FC Copenhagen, AZ Alkmaar and AS Roma, before his current association with Levante. For Australia, Mathew Ryan has featured at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups and helped the Socceroos win the 2015 Asian Cup, earning the tournament’s Golden Glove. A proactive goalkeeper, he combines close-range shot-stopping with distribution and sweeper-keeper actions, while also serving as Australia’s captain.
