Matteo Ruggeri

Matteo Ruggeri is an Italian defender from San Giovanni Bianco, born on 11 July 2002. He joined Atalanta’s youth academy in 2011 and developed through the club’s Zingonia system, winning the 2019/20 Campionato Primavera and 2020 Supercoppa Primavera with the Under-19 side. Ruggeri made his senior Atalanta debut against Liverpool in the Champions League in November 2020, then appeared in Serie A against Inter Milan days later. He spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Salernitana before returning to Bergamo, where he became a regular left-sided player and broke through during 2023/24. Ruggeri started Atalanta’s 3–0 Europa League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen in May 2024 and was selected for the competition’s Team of the Season. In July 2025, he moved to Atlético Madrid and received his first senior Italy call-up in March 2025. At Atlético, Ruggeri offers versatility as a left-back or wing-back.
