Moritz Nicolas

Moritz Nicolas is a German goalkeeper born in Gladbeck on 21 October 1997. At 1.93 metres, he began as an outfielder at Adler Ellinghorst before switching to goal during indoor training, then developed with SV Zweckel and VfB Hüls. He joined Rot-Weiss Essen’s academy in 2012 and moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2015, initially playing for the reserve side. Nicolas gained senior experience on loan at Union Berlin, VfL Osnabrück, Viktoria Köln and Roda JC between 2019 and 2023. He made one appearance for both Union and Osnabrück, while becoming a regular for Viktoria Köln and Roda JC. After Jonas Omlin’s injury, Nicolas made his Bundesliga debut for Gladbach against Bayern München on 2 September 2023 and took over in goal. His game combines quick reactions, long-range saves, footwork in distribution and a growing willingness to organise the defence.
