Matthew Andrew Geary Freese

Matthew Andrew Geary Freese is an American goalkeeper who developed into a leading figure for New York City FC. He began as an outfield player before moving between the posts in childhood, then progressed through the Philadelphia Union system as a Homegrown talent. Freese balanced that development with studies in economics at Harvard University, completing his degree remotely in 2022. With Philadelphia Union, he was part of the 2020 Supporters’ Shield-winning squad while competing for opportunities behind Andre Blake. He joined New York City FC in January 2023 and established himself as the club’s starting goalkeeper later that year. Freese was named NYCFC’s Most Valuable Player in 2024 after a season featuring a reported 73.4 percent save rate. Internationally, he represented the United States at the 2025 Gold Cup, starting every match as the team reached the final. His game combines reflex saves, proactive movement off the line and short-to-medium-range distribution.
