Matthew Ellul

Matthew Ellul is a Maltese defender who has spent his senior career with Hibernians. He joined the club’s academy at 16 and made his senior debut in July 2019, beginning a progression into first-team football. Ellul also represented Malta at under-16, under-17 and under-19 level before progressing to the Malta under-21 setup. With Hibernians, he gained European qualifying experience in the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League. He spent the 2023–24 season on loan at Zabbar St. Patrick, where regular Challenge League football added to his senior experience. Returning to Hibernians, he was part of the squad that won the 2021–22 Maltese Premier League title. Primarily a centre-back, Ellul can also operate at right-back, offering defensive versatility. He remains associated with Hibernians in the 2025–26 season.
