Matthew James Doherty

Matthew James Doherty is an Irish right-back born in Dublin on 16 January 1992. He developed with Swords Celtic, Home Farm and Belvedere before playing for Bohemians, where his performances in a pre-season friendly led Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign him in 2010. At Wolves, Doherty had loan spells with Hibernian and Bury, then became a regular as the club recovered from relegations and won the League One title in 2014. Under Nuno Espírito Santo, he was converted into a right wing-back, helping Wolves secure successive seventh-place Premier League finishes and reach the 2019–20 Europa League quarter-finals. He joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2020, later spent a brief period with Atlético Madrid, and returned to Wolves in 2023. Doherty has represented the Republic of Ireland at senior level since 2018 and is currently listed with Sheffield United.
