Marten Elco de Roon

Marten Elco de Roon is a Dutch midfielder born in Zwijndrecht on 29 March 1991. He developed with ASWH and spent six years in Feyenoord’s academy before joining Sparta Rotterdam, where he made his professional debut in 2010. In 2012, de Roon moved to SC Heerenveen, establishing himself as a dependable defensive midfielder in the Eredivisie. Atalanta signed him in 2015, but after one season he joined Middlesbrough, experiencing Premier League football during the 2016–17 campaign. He returned to Atalanta in August 2017 and became a key part of Gian Piero Gasperini’s evolving side, covering midfield and, when required, the back three. De Roon helped Atalanta win the 2023–24 UEFA Europa League, the club’s first major European trophy. He made his Netherlands debut in 2016 and represented the national team at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.
