Joseph Peter Newell

Joseph Peter Newell is an English midfielder born in Birmingham on 15 March 1993. He joined Birmingham City’s youth system at seven before moving to Peterborough United’s academy in 2009. Newell made his senior debut for Peterborough in April 2011, and he was recognised with the club’s Player of the Year awards in 2014–15. He moved to Rotherham United for an undisclosed fee and helped them win the 2018 Wembley play-off final, securing promotion to the Championship. Primarily a wide-left midfielder or occasional left-back, Newell built his game around crossing and technical delivery. In June 2019, he joined Hibernian on a free transfer and later developed into a central midfielder, using his passing range to switch play and control tempo. Newell won both the Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player of the Year awards for 2022–23, and is listed with Hibernian, where he has also served as captain.
