John McGovern
John McGovern is a Northern Ireland forward who came through Windmill Stars FC in Newry. Born on 17 October 2002, he progressed into senior football with Newry City AFC in 2019. McGovern helped Newry win the 2021–22 NIFL Championship, scoring nine goals in 33 appearances as the club secured promotion. After Newry’s relegation, he moved to Dungannon Swifts in summer 2024. He scored 14 league goals in 29 appearances during the 2024–25 season and opened the scoring in the Irish Cup final against Cliftonville, before Dungannon won on penalties. Shamrock Rovers signed McGovern on 27 May 2025, taking him into the League of Ireland. At Rovers, John McGovern has been used mainly as a centre-forward, while also offering options across the attack. He scored his first Rovers goal in a 4–0 UEFA Conference League qualifying victory over St Joseph’s.
