John Joseph McCarthy

John Joseph McCarthy is an American goalkeeper from Philadelphia, born July 4, 1992. He developed with FC Delco and Match Fit Academy before becoming a La Salle standout, where he set program records for saves, shutouts and appearances. In 2014, McCarthy began his professional career with Rochester Rhinos, winning USL PRO Goalkeeper of the Year and Rookie of the Year. At Philadelphia Union, from 2015 to 2018, he mainly backed up Andre Blake and helped the club reach the 2015 U.S. Open Cup final. He joined Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2019, recording 10 clean sheets in 26 appearances. With LAFC, he entered the 2022 MLS Cup final late after Maxime Crépeau was sent off, then saved two penalties in the shootout and won the MVP award. McCarthy later won the 2024 MLS Cup with LA Galaxy before joining New York Red Bulls in 2025. His career reflects a patient rise from USL football to decisive postseason goalkeeping.
