James Maurer

James Maurer is an American goalkeeper born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, on October 14, 1988. He developed at the University of South Carolina, starting all 78 matches and recording 28 shutouts while earning Conference USA Freshman of the Year honors in 2007. Selected fourth overall by the New York Red Bulls in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft, Maurer made his professional debut with the Atlanta Silverbacks before playing for Universidad de Concepción in Chile. After joining the New York Cosmos in 2013, he became their starter in 2014, set a 372-minute shutout streak, earned NASL Best XI recognition and helped the club win titles in 2015 and 2016. Maurer moved to FC Dallas on a short-term loan in 2017 and later signed permanently, growing from a reserve into an established MLS goalkeeper. In 2020, he led MLS with an 80.6 percent save rate and a 0.84 goals-against average, then stopped a penalty during Dallas’s playoff shootout against Portland. In 2024, he added a player-development executive role at Dallas before joining Houston Dynamo, continuing his career as a veteran goalkeeper.
