Joško Gvardiol

Joško Gvardiol is a Croatian centre-back, born in Zagreb on 23 January 2002. He developed at Dinamo Zagreb after beginning his football education at Trešnjevka, progressing from the academy to his senior debut in 2019. In 2021, Gvardiol moved to RB Leipzig, where he spent two seasons and won consecutive DFB-Pokal titles. His performances in Germany established him as a left-footed defender capable of carrying the ball forward and contributing to build-up play. Gvardiol became internationally prominent at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, wearing a protective mask as Croatia reached the semi-finals and later scoring in the third-place play-off against Morocco. Manchester City signed him in August 2023, and he has developed there as a versatile defender who can operate at centre-back or left-back. At City, Gvardiol has added greater attacking involvement to his defensive work, including goals late in the 2023/24 Premier League season and against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
