Jeffrey Gouweleeuw

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw is a Dutch defender born in Heemskerk on 10 July 1991. He began at local club ADO ’20 before joining SC Heerenveen’s academy in 2006, progressing to the first team and making his senior debut in 2011. In 2013, Gouweleeuw moved to AZ Alkmaar, where he developed into a regular leader and captained the side in domestic and European competition. He joined FC Augsburg in January 2016 and made his Bundesliga debut against Bayern Munich, initially operating as a defensive midfielder to track Thomas Müller. Primarily a centre-back, he has also contributed to build-up play through his passing and used his 1.88-metre frame in defensive and attacking set pieces. Following Daniel Baier’s retirement, Gouweleeuw became Augsburg’s captain in 2020. In March 2025, he reached 250 Bundesliga appearances, a record total for a Dutch player in the competition.
