Ian Ethan Maatsen

Ian Ethan Maatsen is a Dutch left-back who was born in Vlaardingen on 10 March 2002 and plays for Aston Villa. He began at SV CWO before developing with Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven, then moved to Chelsea’s academy in 2018. Maatsen made his senior Chelsea debut in a 7–1 EFL Cup win over Grimsby Town in September 2019. He gained regular first-team experience on loan at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City and Burnley, helping Burnley win the 2022–23 Championship and earning selection for the division’s Team of the Season. In January 2024, Maatsen joined Borussia Dortmund on loan and started their Champions League final against Real Madrid. He also scored against Atlético Madrid in the quarter-finals and was named in the competition’s Team of the Season. At international level, Maatsen won the 2019 European Under-17 Championship with the Netherlands before progressing to the senior side.
