Ian Andrew Harkes

Ian Andrew Harkes is an American midfielder born in Derby, England, who developed through D.C. United’s youth academy before playing four seasons at Wake Forest University. He started all 82 college matches and won the 2016 MAC Hermann Trophy after helping Wake Forest reach the national championship match. Harkes began his professional career with D.C. United as a Homegrown Player in 2017, scoring against FC Dallas and earning MLS Goal of the Week recognition. In 2019, he moved to Dundee United, where he adapted to Scottish football and helped the club win promotion to the Premiership in 2020. He was named Dundee United’s Player of the Year for 2021–22. Harkes returned to MLS with the New England Revolution in 2023 and later joined the San Jose Earthquakes. Primarily a central midfielder, Ian Harkes has been used in both box-to-box and deeper roles, contributing through controlled passing, defensive work and forward movement.
