Finn Surman

Finn Surman is a New Zealand defender from Christchurch, born on September 23, 2003. He began playing football locally and developed with Selwyn United before joining Wellington Phoenix’s academy in 2019. Surman progressed through the club’s pathway, making his first-team debut in December 2021 in an FFA Cup match against Western United. By 2023–24, he had started 27 matches, helping Wellington Phoenix achieve its first top-two league finish and scoring a late headed winner against Melbourne Victory. In July 2024, Surman transferred to Portland Timbers, beginning his Major League Soccer career. For New Zealand, Surman captained the under-20s at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which ended in the round of 16, made his senior debut against Greece in November 2023, and represented the country at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Standing 1.90 metres, Surman combines aerial strength, disciplined defending and reliable short passing in build-up play.
