Edson Omar Álvarez Velázquez

Edson Omar Álvarez Velázquez is a Mexican midfielder from Tlalnepantla de Baz, known for his defensive work and positional versatility. After developing in Club América’s youth system, he made his senior debut under Ricardo La Volpe in October 2016 and scored in the 2016 Apertura final. Álvarez later struck twice in the 2018 Apertura final against Cruz Azul, helping América secure the title. In 2019, he joined Ajax, where he developed from a combative midfielder into a more spatially aware holding player and won two Eredivisie titles. He moved to West Ham in August 2023, bringing ball-winning, screening and short, reliable distribution to the Premier League side. Álvarez has also represented Mexico, including at the 2018 World Cup, and became the first Mexican to score on his UEFA Champions League group-stage debut. His international career includes a 2025 Gold Cup final-winning goal and the tournament’s Golden Ball.
