Derek Austin Cornelius

Derek Austin Cornelius is a Canadian centre-back born in Ajax, Ontario, on 25 November 1997. He began playing in Ajax’s youth system and initially developed as a striker before moving to Europe as a teenager. In Germany, and later with FK Javor Ivanjica in Serbia, Cornelius converted permanently to defence, where his 188-centimetre frame supported his aerial work and physical duels. He returned to North America with Vancouver Whitecaps in 2019 before continuing his career in Europe with Panetolikos and Malmö FF. At Malmö, Cornelius became part of the side that won the 2023 Allsvenskan title. His composed positioning and distribution from the back helped establish him as a ball-playing defender. Cornelius represents Canada internationally, including at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and is now associated with Marseille.
