Daniel George Ballard

Daniel George Ballard is a Northern Ireland international defender who was born in Stevenage, England, in 1999. He developed at Arsenal, where he endured two youth releases before earning a scholarship and continuing his progression in the academy. Ballard moved into senior football with a loan at Blackpool during the 2020–21 season, helping the club win promotion to the Championship. He then joined Millwall on loan for 2021–22, gaining experience as a proactive centre-back in the second tier. Sunderland signed Ballard in July 2022, and he established himself on Wearside through his front-foot defending, aerial work and willingness to step out to challenge attackers. He also contributes in possession by carrying the ball forward and combining short passing with defensive recovery work. Ballard represents Northern Ireland, adding international experience to a club career that has taken him from Arsenal’s academy through the EFL to Sunderland.
