Dirk Abels

Dirk Abels is a Dutch defender born in Udenhout on 13 June 1997. He began his development at Willem II before joining the PSV Eindhoven academy in 2009, where he was primarily developed as a right-back. Abels made his professional debut for Jong PSV in August 2014 against Achilles ’29 and later reached the PSV first team, appearing in a KNVB Cup tie against RKC Waalwijk in October 2018. In January 2019, he moved to Sparta Rotterdam, helping the club win promotion from the Eerste Divisie through the play-offs within six months. He then established himself in the Eredivisie, contributing as a versatile defender through the 2022–23 season. In July 2023, Abels joined Grasshopper Club Zürich on a free transfer. At Grasshopper, he continued his development from full-back into a central defensive role, combining positioning, interceptions and reliable defensive work.
