Calvin Bassey Ughelumba

Calvin Bassey Ughelumba is a Nigerian centre-back born in Aosta, Italy, who developed his football in London after moving to England as a child. He joined Leicester City’s academy at 15 but left without making a senior appearance before moving to Rangers on a free transfer in 2020. Initially used at left-back, Bassey became a defender as Rangers won the Scottish Premiership in 2021. During the 2021–22 campaign, he increasingly operated at centre-back and impressed in Rangers’ run to the Europa League final. Ajax signed Bassey in 2022, giving him experience of a possession-based defensive system during the 2022–23 season. He returned to London with Fulham in 2023 and has since continued in the Premier League, primarily as a left-sided centre-back. Bassey represents Nigeria, having committed to the Super Eagles in 2021, and his mobility, physicality and ability to cover either central defence or left-back remain features of his game.
