Bernardo Mota Veiga de Carvalho e Silva

Bernardo Silva is a Portuguese attacking midfielder, born in Lisbon on 10 August 1994, and a graduate of Benfica’s academy. He joined Benfica’s academy in 2002 and stood out for Benfica B, winning the Segunda Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year award in 2013–14 after scoring seven goals in 38 appearances. He made three senior appearances for Benfica before moving to Monaco on loan in August 2014; the transfer became permanent in January 2015. At Monaco, Silva helped win Ligue 1 in 2016–17 and reach the Champions League semi-finals. Manchester City signed Bernardo in July 2017, and Guardiola has used him on the wing, in midfield and as a false nine. His close control, progressive passing and pressing allow him to escape pressure, combine in tight spaces and support defensive coverage. Silva has also become an established Portugal international, adding national-team experience to a club career featuring sustained tactical versatility.
