Alex Murphy

Alex Murphy is an Irish defender from Galway, born on 25 June 2004. He developed with Corrib Celtic before joining Galway United’s academy in 2019, progressing through the under-15, under-17 and under-19 teams. Murphy made his Galway United first-team debut against Athlone Town in June 2021 and was named the club’s Player of the Month that month. Newcastle United signed him in May 2022, and he trained with Eddie Howe’s senior squad while continuing his development. He made his Premier League debut as a substitute against Chelsea in November 2023, contributing to a 4–1 victory. A 1.88-metre defender, Murphy has operated at centre-back and left-back, combining aerial reach with composed distribution and recovery pace. He has represented the Republic of Ireland through under-21 level and is currently listed with FC Kaiserslautern.
