Adam James Matthews

Adam James Matthews is a Welsh defender from Swansea, primarily a right-back who has also operated on the left and as a wing-back. After joining Cardiff City's academy as a teenager, he signed professionally at 17 and made his first-team debut against Blackpool in August 2009. His breakthrough season earned him the Football League Apprentice of the Year award. In 2011, Matthews moved to Celtic on a free transfer, developing into a regular and winning four Scottish Premiership titles and a Scottish Cup. He started Celtic's 2–1 Champions League victory over Barcelona in 2012. Spells with Sunderland and Charlton Athletic preceded his move to Omonia Nicosia, where he reunited with Neil Lennon, before he joined Shamrock Rovers in 2025. Matthews represented Wales between 2011 and 2018 and remains part of Shamrock Rovers' squad.
