Aïssa Mandi

Aïssa Mandi is an Algerian centre-back born in Châlons-en-Champagne, France, on 22 October 1991. He joined Reims’ academy at eight and progressed to the first team, making his professional debut against Le Havre in August 2010. Mandi helped Reims earn promotion to Ligue 1 in 2011–12, making 26 appearances, and developed from a right-back into a versatile defender. In 2016, he moved to Real Betis, where his composure and distribution suited a ball-playing centre-back role. After 152 appearances, he joined Villarreal on a free transfer in 2021 and made his debut in that year’s UEFA Super Cup. For Algeria, Mandi represented his country at the 2014 World Cup and helped win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. His game is built on positioning, concentration and passing that can bypass the first press, while his experience has made him a longstanding defensive leader.
