Scope and baseline
The series covers the completed regular league seasons from 2014 through 2024. Every season contributes 380 matches, giving 4,180 matches in total. Across those matches, teams scored 10,978 goals, or 2.626 per match when the totals are divided by the covered fixture count.
Using a per-match rate keeps the comparison fair across a constant 20-team schedule. It also separates frequency from volume: the total goals rise when there are more matches, while the rate answers how open the average match was.
The season-by-season curve
The table shows a high early in the window, a pronounced low around 2019, and a return above 2.60 in the final two seasons. Values are rounded to two decimals for display; the underlying calculation uses the full goal and match counts.

The 2016 peak was 0.463 goals per match above the 2019 low. That is a sizeable change over a stable schedule, but the table also cautions against describing the path as a straight decline: the rate moved from 2.479 in 2019 to 2.508 in 2020, held near 2.50 in 2021 and 2022, then rose to 2.645 in 2023.
Peak, dip and recovery
The cleanest comparison is between the first five seasons and the last six. From 2014 to 2018, the combined rate was 2.725 goals per match across 1,900 fixtures. From 2019 to 2024, it was 2.544 across 2,280 fixtures. The later block is therefore 0.181 goals per match lower, roughly 6.6% below the earlier block.
The long-run signal is not “fewer goals every year”; it is a lower scoring level after the 2016 peak, followed by an incomplete recovery.
The 2023 rebound is the strongest late-period lift, with 1,005 goals and a 2.645 rate. The following season slipped to 995 goals and 2.618, so the rebound did not yet restore the early-block average. That distinction matters: a single high season can change the story’s direction without erasing the gap across several seasons.
The total-goal column also prevents a common reading error. The 2024 total of 995 is lower than 2023’s 1,005, but both seasons had the same 380-match schedule. The difference in the rate is therefore a scoring difference, not a schedule-size effect.
What the trend does and does not say
This is a descriptive league-level trend. It says how many goals were scored per completed match in each season; it does not identify why the rate changed. Tactics, team strength, finishing, officiating, injuries and many other factors could matter, but this series does not test any of them.
The practical takeaway is a useful baseline for future comparisons. A season around 2.50 sits close to the lower part of this window, while a season above 2.70 belongs to the more productive early range. The 2024 value sits between those reference points, closer to the long-run average than to either extreme.
Readers can also pair this measure with the companion views of home advantage, draw frequency and low-score matches. Those measures describe different parts of the same result distribution and should not be treated as interchangeable with goals per match.
A rate becomes more informative when its denominator remains visible. Here, each season has 380 completed matches, so the 2016 total of 1,118 goals converts directly to 2.942 goals per match, while the 2019 total of 942 converts to 2.479. If the schedule had changed, the total column could have moved simply because there were more or fewer fixtures. The constant schedule means the contrast is genuinely about the scoring count in the recorded matches.
The early part of the series is not one uniform high-scoring phase. 2014 began at 2.655, 2015 climbed to 2.745 and 2016 reached the peak. The rate then eased to 2.695 in 2017 and 2.587 in 2018. That sequence matters because it shows the peak was followed by a gradual cooling before the sharper low in 2019, rather than by an instant break after one exceptional year.
The late block has its own internal shape. The 2019 value of 2.479 was followed by two seasons close to 2.50. In 2022 the rate was still 2.513, then 2023 moved up to 2.645. The 2024 value of 2.618 preserved much of that lift. A reader looking only at the first and last rows might call the period flat; a reader looking only at the peak and low might call it a collapse. The full sequence supports neither shortcut.
Weighting also deserves a short explanation. The early block contains five seasons and 1,900 matches; the late block contains six seasons and 2,280. The block rates are calculated from all goals divided by all matches, not by taking a simple average of rounded annual rates. That is why the displayed 2.725 and 2.544 values should be read as weighted block baselines. The same rule produces the 2.626 all-window average.
The 0.181-goal block difference is easier to picture as roughly one fewer goal every five to six matches, although that translation is only an intuition and not a new metric. The important point is scale: 0.181 is small compared with the 0.463 gap between the single-season high and low, but it is large enough to persist after thousands of matches have been pooled.
There is also a distinction between a league baseline and the experience of a particular club. A league average combines every team and every fixture, so it can move when the mix of teams changes even if individual clubs do not change in the same way. This article therefore describes the environment in which matches were played; it does not rank teams by attacking output or attribute the league movement to a named style.
Finally, the precision shown in the table is deliberately modest. The audit retains rates to three decimals, while the visible table rounds them to two decimals. The difference between 2.503 and 2.508 is real in the underlying arithmetic but not a reason to build a dramatic narrative around five thousandths. The robust observations are the peak, the trough, the block contrast and the direction of the partial recovery.
The table can be read as three phases without pretending that the labels are formal eras. 2014–2016 is the climb, 2017–2020 is the slide toward the low, and 2021–2024 is the recovery corridor. The phase language is only a reading aid: the underlying observations remain the eleven season rows and the two weighted blocks.
The 2021 and 2022 rates, 2.503 and 2.513, are almost identical even though the goal totals differ by four. With 380 matches in each season, that small total difference produces only a small rate difference. This is a useful reminder that not every visible change in the goals column deserves equal editorial weight.
For evergreen use, the strongest sentence is the one that survives a new season being added: the window averaged 2.626, the early block was higher than the late block, and the late block included a rebound after 2019. A future update can append another completed row without changing the definitions or turning the historic peak into a prediction.
Limits and method
The analysis uses 11 completed LaLiga seasons, 2014–2024, and includes 380 completed matches per season. Goals per match equals total goals divided by completed matches, with displayed rates rounded to two decimals. The source is Xtra-Stats.
The current 2025 season is not used because one fixture remains outside the completed-match set in the supplied coverage. Excluding it keeps the comparison between finished seasons. The calculation does not separate unusual match contexts or estimate causes, and a trend should not be read as a forecast.
