The rate moved higher

A goals-per-match series is a frequency, not a total. It asks how much scoring the average fixture contained, so a season with 306 matches can be compared with another season on the same base. In this window every selected season has that 306-match footprint, which removes schedule size as a competing explanation.

The ten seasons contain 3,060 matches and 9,350 goals. Weighted across the full window, that is 3.06 goals per match. The endpoints are more striking than the average: 866 goals and 2.83 per match in 2015 became 959 and 3.13 in 2024. The difference is 93 goals over an identical number of fixtures.

The table keeps the raw goal totals beside the rate because the two measurements answer different questions. The raw total describes the size of the scoring output; the rate describes the experience of a typical match. Both are needed to avoid turning a rounded average into a story about every fixture.

A decade in four movements

The first movement, from 2015 through 2017, was relatively contained. The rate moved from 2.83 to 2.87 and then down to 2.79, the lowest value in the window. The goal totals followed the same pattern: 866, 877 and 855. Nothing in those three rows suggests a straight trend; the baseline was moving sideways.

The second movement was the step up in 2018 and 2019. The rate reached 3.18 in 2018 and 3.21 in 2019, while total goals reached 973 and 982. Those are not small rounding differences from 2015: they place the average match roughly a third of a goal higher. The rise was also visible in the size of the total, with more than 100 additional goals in 2018 than in 2015.

The third movement was a pause rather than a reversal. Scoring fell to 3.03 in 2020, then recovered to 3.12 in 2021 and 3.17 in 2022. The three-season run never returned to the 2.79 low, even though it also did not repeat 2019 immediately. A multi-season comparison makes that distinction visible.

The fourth movement was the 2023 peak and the 2024 reset. The rate reached 3.22 in 2023, the highest row in the table, before easing to 3.13. The endpoint therefore sits below the peak by 0.09 goals per match, but still above every season from 2015 through 2017.

Peaks, pauses and the late reset

2017 is the useful low case. It produced 855 goals, only 11 fewer than 2015, but the rate was 2.79 because both seasons had the same match count. At the other end, 2023 produced 985 goals and 3.22 per match. The difference between those two seasons is 130 goals and 0.42 goals per match.

The nearest high to 2023 was 2019 at 3.21. The values around the peak matter: 2018 was 3.18, 2020 was 3.03 and 2022 was 3.17. A peak is more persuasive when adjacent seasons sit in the same broad band, but it is still not proof of a permanent level. The 2024 pullback is a reminder to keep the claim descriptive.

The long-term signal is upward; the season-to-season signal is noisy.

That sentence is the safest summary of the series. The data support a higher recent scoring environment relative to the mid-2010s. They do not identify why the environment changed, and they do not imply that every club or every match moved in the same direction. The article’s unit is the competition-season aggregate.

The rounding rule is also important. The table displays two decimals, while the audit keeps four decimal places. For example, 3.1340 appears as 3.13, and 3.2190 appears as 3.22. The rounded labels are useful for reading; the raw values are used for comparisons and the chart.

The total adds scale

Home and away totals provide a second way to see the changing environment. In 2015 home teams scored 479 goals and away teams 387, a 92-goal gap. In 2019 the totals were 508 and 474, narrowing the gap to 34. In 2022 the gap widened again to 165, with 568 home goals against 403 away goals. In 2024 the totals were 500 and 459, a gap of 41.

Those rows demonstrate why the overall rate should not be read as a single tactical narrative. The league can score 3.17 per match in 2022 while the home side supplies most of the extra output, then score 3.13 in 2024 with home and away totals much closer. The same competition-wide rate can be assembled from different balances.

There is also a practical reason to show the totals. A reader can check that 2024’s 959 goals divided by 306 matches gives 3.1340. That simple numerator-and-denominator link is the foundation for the seasonal series and makes the result reproducible without relying on a visual impression from the chart.

Reading the season-to-season steps

The individual changes are useful because they show where the decade’s net rise was made. From 2015 to 2016 the rate increased by 0.04 goals per match, then fell by 0.07 in 2017. The move from 2017 to 2018 was much larger: 2.79 became 3.18, a gain of 0.39. The two following rows, 3.21 in 2019 and 3.03 in 2020, show the familiar pattern of a strong level followed by a pause.

The next three seasons climbed in smaller steps. The rate rose from 3.03 in 2020 to 3.12 in 2021 and 3.17 in 2022, then reached 3.22 in 2023. The 2024 value of 3.13 was 0.09 below the peak. In other words, the recent high was not a single isolated row, but the endpoint was not the record either.

Looking at totals produces the same sequence in whole goals: 928 in 2020, 954 in 2021, 971 in 2022, 985 in 2023 and 959 in 2024. The small fall in 2024 still leaves the season 31 goals above 2020. This is why the article describes a higher recent cluster rather than a permanent upward slope.

The sequence also illustrates the value of reporting exact seasons instead of a decade average alone. A weighted average of 3.06 is a useful summary, but it does not tell a reader that the low was 2017, that the first crossing of three goals came in 2018, or that the peak arrived in 2023. The table and the prose perform different jobs: one preserves the full series, the other identifies the meaningful turns.

Reading the goal environment

The decade is better understood as a rise with reversals than as a straight climb. The 2015 baseline was 866 goals at 2.83 per match, and the 2017 low was 855 at 2.79. From there, the rate moved above three goals in 2019 and stayed above that level in every season from 2020 through 2024. The late run is high, but it is not uniform.

The raw totals reinforce the same sequence. The league recorded 973 goals in 2018, 982 in 2019, 928 in 2020, 954 in 2021 and 971 in 2022. It reached 985 in 2023, the decade high, before settling at 959 in 2024. Because every row contains 306 matches, the total and the rate tell the same ordering story; the rate is still the safer number when a future season has a different schedule.

Home and away goals also change within the overall movement. Home teams scored 479 against 387 away in 2015, while the 2024 split was 500 against 459. Total scoring was higher at the endpoint, but the home-away gap was smaller. That is why the goal-volume trend and the home-advantage trend should remain separate articles: they describe related scorelines at different levels.
